Formula

Number of risers = round(total_height / target_rise)
Actual rise = total_height / num_risers
Number of treads = num_risers − 1  (for straight flight)
Actual run = total_run / num_treads

Comfort rule (Blondel's formula): 2 × rise + going = 600–650 mm

Practical Tips

  • •Maintain consistent rise throughout a flight — even a 5 mm variation per step causes tripping hazards (NBC India Clause 8.2).
  • •Provide a minimum headroom of 2100 mm measured vertically from any tread nose to the ceiling or landing above.
  • •Handrails must be 900 mm high on both sides for public buildings (NBC India); for residential, at least one side at 900 mm.
